R70 Million for SA Athletes by NLC to SASCOC

These funds are to be utilised towards the delivery of Team SA to the Olympic Games, Paralympic Games and the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 Games. Some funds will be used for athlete preparation for these games.

Chairperson of the NLC, Prof Ntshengedzeni Nevhutanda said, “Besides being the largest funder of sport in South Africa, the National Lotteries Commission has a long standing partnership with the Olympics and Paralympics through its relationship with SASCOC. We are very honoured to extend this association in the interests of our athletes who will be competing with the greatest of world sports.”

“Through this historical alliance, we at the National Lotteries Commission have seen our athletes perform at the Olympics since South Africa was re-admitted into the global sports organization. We have witnessed the outstanding achievements of our sportsmen and women who have, on numerous occasions, brought us glory. The NLC is confident that our on-going partnership with SASCOC will bring continuous development and further success for our athletes,” added Prof Nevhutanda.

“SASCOC would like to thank the National Lotteries Commission for the huge sponsorship they have contributed to Team SA. This relationship with the NLC is not new but dates back from the time when we re-entered the Olympic movement. The NLC has been involved in funding our development and OPEX programmes which ultimately results in the preparation of our world class athletes,” said Mr Gideon Sam, President of SASCOC.

Sam added, “The public’s support is also appreciated because the money they use to purchase lotto tickets go a long way towards supporting Team SA and adding to their success. We can assure the NLC that their support and continued association with SASCOC has enabled our athletes to compete at the highest levels of international sports. This sponsorship is an indication that the NLC has full confidence in our athletes as well as SASCOC’s ability to deliver a successful games.”

Chief Executive of SASCOC, Tubby Reddy reiterated that, “The NLC has always been partners with SASCOC and we are grateful for their continued support towards the development of our athletes. We have always maintained that sponsorship, as shown by the NLC, is vital to our ability to produce world class athletes.”

Graham Hill: Coach of the year – African Union Sport Council Region 5 (AUSC Reg5) Awards

The African Union Sports Council Region 5 (Southern Africa) held their inaugural Regional Awards in South Africa over the weekend and swimming was the big winner of the night, walking away with four key awards.

Swimming South Africa’s National Head Coach, Graham Hill, received the Coach of the Year honour at the ceremony, which is aimed at recognizing athletes, coaches and sports confederations from Southern Africa.

Botswana’s 19 year old Olympic hopeful, Naomi Ruele won the Junior Sportswoman of the Year for her outstanding performances in major global events, as well as her time and technique improvement.

Ruele, who is on a FINA Scholarship in Miami, was also awarded the Swimmer of the Year from the Florida International University after breaking the 50m freestyle record at the NCAA Swimming Championships in the USA in March this year.

Veteran Olympian Kirsty Coventry (Zimbabwe) took home the Sportswoman of the Year, while Southern African Swimming Confederation (CANA Zone IV) claimed the Sports Confederation of the Year award.

Southern Africa swimming has seen phenomenal growth over the past few years, with 6 countries achieving qualifying times for Rio 2016, compared to the 2 from London 2012.

Highlights of the event? My highlight was coming from behind after my little mistake in the transition which left me about 25m behind in the swimming leg, and still winning the race.
Lessons learned from the event? I learnt that you must always take an extra split second to make sure of your actions.

During my transition I threw my shoe into the basket and dove into the pool, not noticing that my shoe hit my other shoe and landed out the basket. Luckily I was called back to put it back into the basket and wasn’t disqualified, but it cost me valuable time.

General observations and vibe of the meet? There was a great turn out, the biggest for a Gauteng Biathle Championship event. There were close to 160 athletes taking part.
What/Who motivated you throughout the champs? It was a combination of family support, friends and the crowd in general.
Biggest challenge leading up to / at the meet? Trying to find the right balance between different training programs.
What is happening next for you in sport? The 2016 South African Biathle/Triathle/Laser-Run  Championships in Bela-Bela
Anything Else you want to mention? I will be participating in my first competitive Triathle event at the S.A. championships this year and I’m looking forward to it very much.

Up Close with Wilson Tlhakiso Mafona

Today meet one of SA’s brightest stars – Aerobics Gymnast Wilson Tlhakiso Mafona.  He is a young man that is driven and focussed. He has a heart for uplifting people and says “I want to groom more talented good amazing gymnast and set the bar high for Mzansi. I want to be a good leader and a very good example to the rest of the youth”.

He has just executed some stellar performances in the world stage in Korea at the World Champs individually and part of a trio with Dominique Mann and Happy Ledwaba. He is a great role model to our youth, and well celebrated all around for his excellence.

He says “I am always driven to improve every day. I can’t be satisfied with my last performance. I am disciplined. I have to follow a strict exercise and training program. I am competitive and want to beat your competitors in every competition. I am always confident in myself and believe that I am winner. I make moves on my own, not just respond to what other athletes do. I always stay focused on the task at hand and tune out any other distractions. I am committed to my sport. I gave up on my other hobbies and interests”.

INTERVIEW:

Q: Congratulations! – You did brilliantly at the Aerobic Gymnastics World Championships in Korea. Do you want to share a little on your achievements here (individually / team), how did you experience it? Lesson learned?

This was a great experience as it was my first time in Korea for such big games. Competition wise was quite hectic and very stressful because my goal was to obtain my 1st position in Africa and also qualify 1st in the trio category in African countries.

I did my best and reached my goal. World Champs were good to me. I was strong enough to a point where I lost two of my difficulties in my routine and still managed to come 1st in Africa.  The whole trip was just amazing. Giving me and my trio team mate good results. I must say our hard training paid off. Hopefully SASCOC  will send us to the next World Games in Poland next year June. This is the biggest games aerobic gymnastics can ever attend world wide.

Q: Why do you have so much love and respect for your coach/es?

They always say without an athlete there is no Coach. Well for me it goes both ways. Without my coach there is no me. I am where I am today with this sports because of her. She put up so much time to make me the best gymnast in the continent.

Q: How do you balance your sport with the rest of your life / career / studies?

It is difficult because I love my sports. I wish I got paid for doing this sports…. pity that can never happen. I am working as a personal trainer. I finished my personal training qualification beginning of this year. So I juggle around my work schedule to fit in my gymnastics training time. I’m mostly free over the weekends so that’s when I get to hang around with family and friends and relax as much as I can.

Q: Would you like to share a little bit more about your faith journey and how it has affected your life / sports?

I have always been active. From primary school till now. I have accomplished so many things within my sports. All my dreams came true. Only one more dream has to be fulfilled.  And that is representing South Africa at the World Games Next year June. I have to say it was never an easy ride.

Q: What do you do to relax?

I would listen to music indoor and watch lots of TV. otherwise I’d go eat out with family. I prefer  to relax indoor because I get to think about the future and plan properly for the next day.

Q: One thing about you that the world does not know 🙂

hahaha hahahahah ah lol the world shall know soon enough about Wilson Mafona. Can’t say anything for now.

Q: What is your personal favourite motivational quote?

There are two quotes

1st- I am in charge of how I feel and I am choosing to be happy today.

2nd- Be your self because an original is worth more than a copy.

Q: In your opinion, how do you define greatness / success in life?

Success is about raising and being part of a loving family, about maintaining deeply satisfying relationships with friends and colleagues, and about contributing something worthwhile to their community or to a cause they believe in. Success means being able to spend freely and enjoy the good things in life

Q: What’s your WHY ?  

I do this because I love keeping healthy and fit and mostly because I’m in love with the sport. I want everyone to look up to me and say they want to be like me. Travel the world, represent my country and give back to my community. I want to run my own gym club where I will be able to groom more talented good amazing gymnast and set the bar high for Mzansi. I want to be a good leader and a very good example to the rest of the youth.

Q: What happens next for you i.t.o competition? Anything else you would like to share?

Nothing major is coming up with Gymnastics.  I’m now preparing my self for SA got talent theatre auditions where I will be show casing our beautiful sports of aerobic gymnastics.  Thumbs up for me and fingers crossed. Stressed.

A story of hope – Liezel van Rooyen pioneers GROWTHTIP

As part of my MEET THE MOMS SERIES, I connected with Liezel van Rooyen, mom of champion swimming girl Carissa van Rooyen. I was moved by her humility, her grateful heart and her deep desire to impact the world for the better, once changed life at a time. Liezel wants to ensure that every South African is blessed with the means to generate an income. She has been through deep waters as a single mom, unemployed with a teenage daughter active in sport, but still she rose all the way to stand again. Liezel I salute your tenacity, your faith in God, and the brilliant example that you set for many women in our society.

Q: You have just launched your own business entrepreneurial brand – GrowthTip.  Congrats! Tell me more about it.

The vision of GrowthTip is ambitious in that it wants to see every South African blessed with a means to generate an income and provide for their families. Today’s economy and circumstances in South Africa demands this.

It is our mission to develop, support and promote start-up and small owned/managed businesses to ensure their growth and sustainability in  co-ordination and partnership with other role players (e.g. training providers, financiers and corporates – enterprise and supplier development initiatives). 

It is also a goal to help entrepreneurs grow and increase their contribution to sustainable and equitable social and economic development, employment and wealth creation in South Africa.

Q: When did you first know this is what you wanted to do?

This dream was borne when I was un-employed for 13 months from January 2014 to January 2015. Not many people know this.

I am a highly qualified and experienced individual but finding a job was very, very difficult. I am a single parent and I do not receive any financial support. Trying to look after your high performing child and not knowing where food will come from the next day, or how she will get to training, introduces you to new levels of challenges you could never have understood and have empathy for unless you experience these challenges yourself. Thanks to the grace of God, family and friends we managed to get through this phase in our lives.

 Carissa and I look gratefully back at this phase in our lives. We both are much better people as a result of this and I know now that we had to experience this in order for me to make a REAL difference during my time on earth.

 The skills and experiences I gained have prepared me for this new journey in our life’s.

Q: Tell me about your career journey / (experience) up to this current point.

I have had the most amazing career and experiences since I joined the job market immediately after I matriculated in 1988.

I received a full University bursary to study Bsc Ed. at Rand Afrikaans University from January 1989. However on the day I had to report at University on 22 January 1989, I informed my parents that I do not think that this is what I want to do. They acknowledged this decision with a response that I need to find a job and support myself.

 Back then this was not a challenge. I managed to secure an interview on the same day and started my employment at First National Bank the following day as a Savings Clerk at Germiston South Branch. I realised very soon that I do not have a future doing a very administrative job and my career soon lead me to becoming the 1st female representative in the Commercial sector of the Oil Industry. Total South Africa provided the platform on which my career kicked off. I travelled the globe and spend a lot of time in Paris, France and other parts of the world while I climbed the corporate ladder so to speak. I learned about sales, business, IT, etc during my career here and studied Business Management through Henley Business School in the UK. I then joined Nedbank and Standard Bank and then ventured into the Education sector where I trained Business Skills and developed training material. I returned to the IT sector and during this time I became unemployed. I realised then that I have a lot more to give to the human race. Returning to Adult Education fuelled this vision.

Creating employment and providing a means for this is my purpose.

Q: What have been the highlights?

Some highlights in my career include the following:

Working and interacting with International Businesses

Experiencing great success and failure

Meeting extraordinary people

Having it all and losing it all again

Mastering myself and despite everything influencing a young life successfully – my daughter

Leaving for Egypt OR Tombo Airport

 Q: What’s the best part of your job / business?

Contributing towards the success of other people – it is extremely humbling to make even the smallest contribution to people’s lives which is extraordinary to them. Often this contribution is perceived as insignificant to most but to the ordinary man/ woman it is significant.

Q: What is the most Challenging part?

Making time for myself. I tend to give too much to others. I had to learn to say no to others and yes to myself.

Level 3 Nationals march 2015 PEQ: What is your typical day, or maybe week if days are very different?

 My typical day would start with meditation in the morning followed by doing my affirmations and visualization. The time I get up is very much influenced by Carissa’s schedule i.e. morning training or not therefore I can get up at 3h30 or 5h00. Breakfast and lunch are then prepared for Carissa. I would drop her at school either at 6h30 or 7h15 – subject to morning training. Meetings, phone calls, admin, strategic thinking, appointments, facilitation, etc. would follow. My day starts to conclude with fetching Carissa from swim training, arriving back at home at 19h30, dinner, homework, wrapping up the business day and preparation for the following day concludes before I retire.

 I do not manage to sleep a lot, however sleeping and exercising is receiving a renewed focus. I am aging badly!  😉

Q: What are your other interests / or do to relax/ have fun?

My interests, relaxing and having fun seems to evolve around Carissa’s swimming career. Most swim parents can vouch for this. You spend hours during the week and over weekends next to the pool. I would spend this time mostly working.

 I am now disciplining myself to reading a couple of hours a day again and have registered to study again.

 I love cooking and baking and when I can, I invest a lot of energy into this.

Q: As a mom how do you manage to balance your family and career life.  Your tips and tricks: advice for other moms? 

Managing your family and work life will always be a challenge, especially with being a single parent. The best way to do this is to plan very well and to commit to the plan and execute it to the best of your ability. You need to acknowledge that you are a human being as well who needs some attention from time to time. Giving all the time will guarantee failure.

 Team work with your family and communication is critical. Carissa and I would agree our respective goals and ensure that we both understand each other’s needs. We also check in with each other every day to see how the other is doing,

 We would agree our action plan and review it as we make progress. We do not waste time and energy on energy drainers and manage successfully to focus on what is REALLY important. We remind each other of the bigger picture.

 We might not have as much as others do at this point in time, but we know we can rely on our FAITH, COURAGE and BEING GRATEFUL!

 We know we can only be the best we can be as individuals by operating as one team.

Q: Has your daughter’s swimming career, which will imply more and more travelling,  inspired you to make the bold move to start your own business?

Absolutely! Both time and money are massive factors. The reality is that swimming is an expensive sport and unfortunately swimming does not receive the same resources as other sports do in South Africa. The association does it best with the little resources they receive and as parents we need to do our part in contributing towards our children’s successful swimming careers. We are extremely grateful towards Swimming South Africa, Central Gauteng Aquatics and Carissa’s sponsors however I need to make my contribution as well.

 I also want to be at every gala Carissa participates in. There is no replay button of our life’s events and it all happens so fast.

 Due to finances I could not attend the Grand Prix in Durban this year. It was the worst time of my life being home alone while Carissa participated in Durban. We also experienced this when Carissa participated at the Seagulls gala in October 2015 and I could not be there again due to finances and not being able to take time off work.

 I told myself that this will never happen again. We only have these few moments in life to celebrate and I can influence being there.

 Thank GOD for great friends who were there when I could not be there.

Q: What lessons have you learned from your champion swimmer daughter J

Oh my word. Where do I start. Carissa’s conscientiousness, self-discipline, courageousness, passion and commitment, goal setting, facing and dealing with great challenges and difficulties and never giving up inspired me even more to take this step. Actually she is the main contributor and influencer to me taking this step.

Q: How do you see the journey ahead for your brand / business?

GrowthTip must become the TIP for GROWING people and entrepreneurs. I want to see GrowthTip being the enabler of establishing and growing thousands of successful entrepreneurs on many different levels. Unemployment must no longer be a concern of South Africans. Everybody must have a dream and a means to succeed.

Q: Anything else you would like to share?

I have learned so much from so many people and different experiences. My greatest learning and experience however came when I realised that: 

  1. You must have Faith
  2. One must never give up
  3. You cannot do it all by yourself
  4. If you don’t ask, the answer will always be no
  5. You must be grateful for what you have, your experiences and the people you have in your life
  6. You must share your knowledge and experience with others
  7. You must be honest
  8. You must allow others to be successful
  9. You must help other’s to achieve their dreams and potential
  10. You must acknowledge and respect others
  11. You need to dream
  12. You must be brave and don’t let fear become your disabler.

Report Back – Adri Visser – Olympic Trials

Q: You did brilliantly at SA Nationals / Olympic Trials 2016, with many podium positions, congrats and qualifying for Rio! It was still one of the toughest, and most important sporting events for a swimmer to attend. Would you like to share what is on your heart and mind regarding that champs and how you experienced it?

Wow, this year’s SA Senior Nationals & Paralympic Trials was certainly one for the books that I will never forget; the vibe was really overwhelming and pushed us as swimmers to really go for it.  Yes, it was a tough and very important one but in some way I knew in my heart that I would be able to swim my 50m S5 Butterfly MQS Qualifying time.  On Day 1 I swam a MET 200m I.M SM5 time, a good sign for the weeks swimming remaining.  The biggest blessing of it was that it was a personal best time in the 50m Butterfly of 51.62 with my previous Africa Record being 51.63.  That morning I was so emotional and thankful reaching my goal.    Getting a Gold in 100m Butterfly and Silver in the 50m Butterfly was really the cherry on the cake.

Q: What was your biggest challenge leading up to the Olympic Trials (if any), and how did you manage that challenge?

In the beginning I was concerned about my responsibilities as a honors student at the NWU Pukke, that I needed to prioritize everything so that nothing would fall behind or be neglected but quickly I found it not to be a problem at all as they were very accommodating and supportive in helping my dream to come true.  We (my brilliant coach Marike and I) worked the swimming sessions around class time so both could be done with 2 swim sessions on some days.  She has really been a pillar of strength for me in this time.

Q: What was your state of mind leading up to it?

I was very positive, believing that I had the ability to swim the time that I needed to qualify but must admit that I got stressed at a point where I just reached out to my friends, my friend Marco kept me grounded in my faith and supported me a 100% as Abie, Ben, Nannette and mom sent me encouragement when needed, they were all so amazing.  My sponsors Die Turke was so supportive too, they make the journey possible.  Marike made me strong by keeping me focused during warm ups & just being there for me.  Mostly I knew that God’s will would be done and that He would give me the strength to be Great*

Q: Why do you have such deep seated respect for your coach/es, support system along your journey?

As many know the journey to reaching your goals is never easy or a walk in the park, it has its ups and downs.  Truth be told.. a swimmer is only as great as what their coach is, all you need to do is swim your heart out, she will work on your strength, endurance, fitness, speed and perfect taper time when you fully trust and follow the programs to the best of your ability.  But it’s so much more than that, it’s having each other’s backs and setting goals together and meeting each other more than half way, encouragement when tired and a pat on the shoulder when doing well.  I’ve been swimming my best times ever and know that it would not have been possible without my coach Marike van Oort.

Q: What would your advice be to young teenage girls who are on this difficult and much challenged journey of swimming?

Don’t look at the difficulty or challenges of your journey, rather embrace your passion for your swimming, enjoy every moment during racing and training and most importantly is to stay humble when you reach the top.  No swimmer is strong on their own so trust your coach and lean on your friends & family in all that you do.

Q: Lessons learned/ notes to self so far on your swimming journey in general?

Positivity is the key to success and it’s not about how many times you fall but rather how many times about how fast you stand up.  Learn to except that there are things beyond your control and go the way God guides you to go.

Q: What is in the immediate pipeline for your swimming and academic careers?

I’m hoping to make the Rio 2016 Paralympic SA Team; I’m training really hard for it.  Being able to represent SA at such a level as I did in Beijing will really be a highlight in my career, I’m hoping to swim some more personal best times there.  Academically completing my honors degree next year and see where God takes me after that.  Perhaps doing more Motivation Talks would be fantastic!!

Q: Anything else you would like to share?

Swimming isn’t all about a Gold medal or fast time, it’s about feeling so alive and free when swimming that time and getting that splits and ranking down, it’s there where you except who you are and you feel like you and the water become one.  When trying your best and you don’t win that race, you’re a true champion when you congratulate your victor and being satisfied with who you are…

Meet the Olympians: Farida Osman

Excited to feature one of Africa’s finest daughters, Egyptian swimming champion, Farida Osman. She was a young Olympian at the age of 17 and now her sails are set for Rio Olympics. Nicknamed the Golden Fish, this young star and multiple record breaker is US born but proudly raised in Cairo, Egypt.  She is currently studying at University of California, Berkeley and proudly part of Team Golden Bears.

She says “I am a hard worker and passionate young lady that happened to have little talent and would like to pursue my dream of having an Olympic medal for my country. I would like to share my experience with the young athletes back home to give them the hope and will to succeed by pursuing their dream”.

INTERVIEW:

Q: You are headed for the Rio Olympics, your second Olympics and again a life long dream realized. You will proudly represent your country Egypt. Wow and well done! What is on your heart and mind right now concerning this qualification/ pending Olympics?

I qualified for the 2nd Olympics (London 2012 and now Rio) in 2 events till now; 50 free and 100 fly. I am very happy that I will represent my country Egypt and will do all my best to make Egypt proud.  I am staying in Berkeley alone the whole summer training here with my coach till Rio on 6th of August. It gets hard to be away from my family and friends but I guess it’s worth the sacrifice.

Q: Girls  fight a particular battle and have their own sets of challenges in the swimming arena. Would you like to share your thoughts on this?

As a swimmer girl here in California, there are absolutely no differences between boys and girls in terms of duties or limitations in the team. I train only with women in Berkeley as the men have another coach/program. I spend most of the day with my teammates, so they are my family here. Of course women always have their limitations in some days in the month, but I learned how to manage all my problems to avoid any hindrance in my training.

Q: What would your advice be to young athletes?

My advice to young athletes, not only girls, is to never give up on your dreams and to be committed and determined to it because it is definitely worth the journey. So if you want to succeed and achieve your goal, you have to work hard and accept that you have to be out of your comfort zone because it is not easy.

Q: Would you like to share a little bit more about your journey and how it has affected your life / sports?

I always believed in myself since I started swimming at a very young age. My parents supported me and still are, all the way by encouraging me and by getting rid of all obstacles that may distract me or prevent me from reaching my goal. I got an athletic scholarship in one of the best schools in America in academics as well as swimming (UC Berkeley).  It is very tough to live alone at the age of 18 and take care of many things in this young age (Meals, Laundry, finances, besides the new school, new training, new friends, new country …… ). After the first year, I was able to adapt to this new system and I definitely learned a lot from it. It not only made me a stronger swimmer but a stronger person as well. I am now tough, responsible and independent.

Q: Beside swimming, what else do you have a passion for?

Besides swimming, I have a passion for listening to music, watching ‘Friends,’ and shopping with my friends.

Q: What is your personal favourite motivational quote?

My favorite quote is: “Never a failure always a lesson”.

Q: Your have an interesting journey, US born, brought up in Cairo Egypt and currently studying in the USA – tell me a little about that?

I was born in Indiana USA where my parents (Dentists) did their postgraduate studies. I grew up in Cairo Egypt till I was 18 years old. I studied in a French school (Lycee Francais du Caire) till the Brevet degree and then I moved to Cairo American College in the high school where I graduated in 2013 and I got a full scholarship at UC Berkeley. I was also accepted in many good US schools like Harvard with scholarship but I chose UC Berkeley because it was a great balance of academics and sports.

Q: In your opinion, how do you define greatness in  life?

I think greatness in life is to follow your dream, work hard, fight and never give up till you reach your goal. Then pass your experience and success to others in an attempt to give back to your community.

Q: What’s your WHY ?  

I already answered this above but I would like to be a great Female Ambassador to my country where I can inspire young female athletes to pursue their dreams and that there’s more to life than just getting your nails and hair done haha.

Q:  One thing about you that the world does not know 🙂

I hate to admit it but I actually enjoy watching “Keeping up with the Kardashians” haha. I follow them on all social media. I know its lame but it is definitely entertaining

Names of various Events participated in? SA Level 3 Nationals, Regionals & S A Schools
Names of medals/ awards received for which events? Bronze medal 200m fly 15-17 age group.
Highlights of the event? That awesome feeling on the podium when your name is announced representing South Africa during the awards process.

Interacting with Olympians from other African Countries.

Lessons learned from the event? South Africa has a very strong and enthusiastic swimming base amongst the youth.

The nerves we have at big events is also common amongst the Olympians, it’s how we learn to manage them that’s important.

General observations and vibe of the meet? The meet was truly spectacular. Overall there was a buzz of positivity and motivation from my colleagues to new acquaintances.

As the gala progressed we all became like one big family, this for me was very comforting especially being away from home.

What/ who / motivated you throughout the meet / champs? My friends Fadhil and Nabil Saleh, Brady Samuels, Taahir Essof, Kurt Rautenbach, Ryan Chandler & Jacques Malan.

The Olympians Igor Mogne, Mario and Pedro Pinotes shared valuable advice.

Most importantly – the daily telephonic support I received from my family in South Africa.

Biggest challenge leading up to / at the meet? (if any) I turned 15 the month before this gala.

Having to race in the 15-6 age group for most events, in some cases 15-17 and even open-division. Most entrants were a good two years older than me.

In the open division 800m free I swam against Olympians and still managed to finish 7th overall.

Swimming in the bigger age group was in some ways disheartening, (like not always receiving a medal), yet in more ways than one very inspirational.

Anything Else you want to mention This international event has given me an open eye view of the bigger picture. I am now more confident than ever before and remain committed to my vision.

SASCOC SALUTES BRAVE YOUTH OF 1976

On the 40th anniversary of the student uprising in Soweto, SASCOC would like to pay tribute to those who struggled for justice and change in South Africa.

On 16 June 1976, thousands of students took to the streets in Soweto to protest against inferior education. Their actions inspired students from other parts of the country and set in motion a series of events that brought ultimate change in the country. “We pay tribute to those young people, a generation, that inspired many of us in the sports movement to intensify our struggle for change in the country.

The actions of those students compelled us to work tirelessly, in the face of tremendous challenges, to overcome and defeat apartheid. It is only fitting that their sacrifices are today acknowledged and celebrated as it eventually brought about change in our country”, said President of SASCOC, Gideon Sam. Sam noted that the words of late President Nelson Mandela are very apt at this moment: “Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire. It has the power to unite people in a way that little else does. It speaks to youth in a language they understand. Sport can create hope where once there was only despair. It is more powerful than governments in breaking down racial

“As we journey towards the Olympics and Paralympics in Rio later this year, we are confident that the spirit of sacrifice, unity, dedication, that symbolized the struggles of the students of 1976, will be deeply ingrained in the athletes representing our country”, added Sam. “The actions of the students during the protests in Soweto in 1976 which spread throughout the country, was a timely reminder that apartheid and all its manifestations were contrary to normal human relations and development. It gave renewed impetus and momentum to many of us in the sports movement who strongly believed that there could be no normal sport in an abnormal society”, said Chief Executive of SASCOC, Tubby Reddy.

Reddy added: “We owe the students of 1976 tremendous gratitude and at the same time pay tribute to the many young people who were brutally cut down by the apartheid forces. As a country we lost many young people whose talents and skills could have been demonstrated on the global stage. We call on the youth of today to take up the baton of the fallen of 1976 who inspired all of us, and to aspire to excellence in all spheres, including sports.”

INTERVIEW:

Q: You are passionate and doing so well in your Weightlifting tell me a little bit about how you started in Weightlifting and your journey in the Weightlifting arena up to now?

I started Crossfit as an assist sport for rugby, however my love for Crossfit grew.  I stopped rugby to focus on my new “love”.  I trained at the ECX Crossfit Box on the Sardinia Bay Road.  Mona Pretorius is the owner of the box as well as a South African weightlifting champion.  After training for about 2 months, Mona told me that I would be competing in an upcoming weightlifting competition, she said, “I won’t take no as an answer.”  Little did I know that it was actually a SA Junior champs competition.  After that competition my focuse shifted from Crossfit to weightlifting.  Later that year I competed at the SA Senior Champs and won a silver medal.

Q: What is the highest accolade that you have achieved in Weightlifting and what is your greatest personal accomplishment?

My highest achievement so far is the Silver medal at the SA Senior Champs.  I was also awarded a colour blazer at school which I wear with great pride.

Q: Why do you have so much respect for your coach?

Mona is totally focused.  She is disciplined in all areas of her life, right from what she eats to how often she trains.  This dedication has seen her dream of going to the Olympics later this year become a reality.  Throughout all this, she still finds time to encourage and train me.  She is mentally strong and does not let bad days get her down.  This dedication to her sport and to me is something that I greatly admire.

Q: Where have you travelled to before, what are you highlights of these travels, and what does travelling  do for your mindset/ perspective on things regarding your sport?

To date I have not travelled for the sport other than to Johannesburg.  This was really exciting for me as it was the first time I had been on a plane.  I would look forward to travelling in the future, I think to compete with other countries would be a really awesome but also daunting at the same time.

Q: What do you do to relax?

I enjoy going to the movies with friends when possible and also to hangout with guys at youth on a Friday night.

Q: Tell me one thing about yourself that the world does not know 🙂

I was born with an extra “digit” on my left hand 🙂

Q: What was the best advice you were ever given?

My dad always said, greatness is 2% talent and 98% hard work.

Q: What is your personal favourite motivational quote?

I have a few motivational quotes that I like, but the one that does it for me is “Be phenomenal or be forgotten”, another is “Don’t be afraid to close your eyes and dream but then open your eyes and see!”

Q: How do you currently manage to balance all the things in your life?

I am very fortunate at this stage, my life is not too complicated.  My focus is school and training.

Q: What’s your WHY ? 

My why – I have a desire to honour God, who has gifted me with this ability and talent.  I have a desire to honour my parents and coach who have sacrificed for me to achieve in this sport.  I have a desire to honour my school, who have recognised my achievement.

I want to be that light on hill for others to see and aspire too.  I would like to be a role model for future athletes of the sport.  I hope to contribute to SA Weightlifting by showing the youth that your background or circumstances do not determine your destiny.
