INTERVIEW:

Q: At what age did you start swimming and why?

I started swimming when I was in Gr 3.  I was almost 9 years old.  My sister, Abigail, was already swimming with Bianca and I used to watch her train.  I asked my mom if I could also please swim as it looked like so much fun.  My mom thought it was funny that I wanted to do swimming training because I refused to put my face in the water until I was 5,5 years old.

Q: You attended your first International event – Junior Africa Swimming Champs – Egypt last year, proudly part of Team SA – Congrats! How did you experience that?

It is my dream to swim for my country and so I was so excited to have been chosen to represent SA at the Junior Africa Champs.  I was blessed because my coach was part of the SA squad.  I also had the opportunity to spend time with my SA competitors and I got to know them better.  I really enjoyed being part of a relay team with these girls.  I was very happy with my races and one of the highlights was standing on the podium singing our national anthem as they raised our flag.  This is something I will always remember and treasure.  I felt God’s presence for the whole tour which made it even more special.

Q: Tell me a little bit about your home and school life?

I attend our local community high school, Edgemead High School.  I am in Gr 8 and I swim for my school’s swimming team.  I enjoy school and I work very hard at my academics and so I reap the rewards.

I have a wonderful, supportive family and we are very close.  I am so grateful to my dad and mom who sacrifice so much of their time and money so that Abi and I can excel in life.  My parents and extended family encourage us to try our best and to just enjoy what we are doing.  I am blessed because I get to do this with my sister.  She is always right there with me in training and on tours which makes this all even more special.

Q: Why is it important to try and excel at academics at school?

I believe it says a lot about your character.  You need to strive and excel in everything that you do.  Having a good work ethic tells people a lot about one’s attitude to life.  You don’t have to be the best, you just have to strive to be your best.

Q: What is your favorite food? And who must cook it 🙂 ?

I love my mom’s spaghetti – no one else can make it the same.

Q: Who is your sports hero?  What have you learned from him / her?

I love Karin Prinsloo and Missy Franklin.  They are both strong, Christian women and they both swim for His glory.  My sister, Abi, is also one of my role models.

Q: What is your personal favourite motivational quote?

“Be humble in victory and gracious in defeat.”

Q: What is your favourite Bible Verse?

Joshua 1:9 – “Be strong and courageous, do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

Philippians 4:13 – “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

Q: At this point and time – what are you most grateful for in your life?

I am grateful for my family who love me unconditionally and who will sacrifice everything for me.  I am grateful that I am raised in a loving and supportive home.  I am grateful to have the best coach, Bianca Marais, in the world.  She understands me so well and always has my best interests at heart. She sacrifices so much of her own time for us.  She leads by example and is always there for us.  God has definitely blessed me by putting her in my life.  I am grateful to be part of an amazing team. I am grateful to God every day for His grace and love and that He has promised me that I never have to do anything in my own strength.

Q: What would your message of encouragement to South African and other youth and our nation?

We need to stay strong, believe in ourselves and not live in fear.  We have an awesome country filled with awesome people.  We need to learn to forgive, support, encourage and respect one another. We need to believe and have hope.

Q: Anything else you would like to share?

I was doing my Bible Study the other day and I read something that really impressed upon my heart.  We need to learn to dream BIG and it has to be a God vision!  Your God vision/dream mustn’t be too small.  If your dream doesn’t scare you, then it is not big enough. We need to have faith and trust God.  Your dream cannot be too narrow.  It must include others as you cannot achieve your God vision by yourself.

Christmas Prince of Peace

Published by:

“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is GIVEN: and the government shall be upon His shoulder: and His name shall be called Wonderful, Counseller, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace”. Isa 9:6

And so as we celebrate the birth of our King Jesus, the greatest Gift that was given to mankind, I ask myself, what gifts can I present to my Saviour King?

I pray that I may bring gifts of gratefulness, because 2016 was sprinkled with abundant gems of goodness from above.

I pray to bring gifts of love and acceptance towards those who are weak and sidelined.

I pray to bring gifts of celebration of others more and more, and uplift their worth and worthiness.

I pray to bring gifts of good influence and change and leave my world a better place – starting where I am, and using what I have.

This is truly my heartfelt prayer this Christmas 2016.

Merry Christmas Baby!

Fresh & Hungry – Chris Luus

Published by:

What a delight it was to meet this young champion Chris Luus via a Heslop Sports Rio Olympics competiton that he won! Since then he agreed to this stunning interview, and once again I stand surprised and amazed at the insight, dept and wisdom that he shows – this young leader and swimmer. Plus what puts him even higher in my rankings, is that he loves books and reading :-). He is grounded in his belief that God has a great purpose for his life.

Congratulations are in order for Chris on his qualification to compete at the 2017 Junior National Championships in Durban – well done, despite your year of medical challenges, you rose victoriously.

When asked the question – who are you he responded – “ I am a swimmer, through and through, my hair is chlorified, my skin is as dry as the desert and I have no social life (only joking, sort of). I`m a lane leader, and I love being an inspiration to younger swimmers”.

That is the way I was raised and they were also swimmers just like us, so they know what they’re doing and we have to respect them for that.

Fresh and Hungry – Nathania van Niekerk

Published by:

Girl power at its absolute best is to be seen in this steely and determined champion swimmer – Nathania van Niekerk. SA is truly blessed to have young athletes with such purpose and soul like our Natz. She has been through many enriching life experiences for her young self, some tougher and much more challenging than others, but has come through victorious each and every time. She is firmly grounded in her faith in Christ and speaks with much hope and excitement of the future as she walks by faith and not by sight. She has also stepped out in her green and gold at many top meets, proudly representing our beautiful nation.

Congrats to Nathania on being elected Head Girl at TUKS High School for 2017. A leadership position that is befitting for a young lady with such vision to shine bright and make a difference in the lives of others, especially young swimming girls.

When asked “Who are you?” this was her response: “This is actually quite difficult as people only see me as a swimmer. I am a very big academic and a car fanatic. One of my greatest passions other than swimming is working with children. I aspire to be an inspiration to those younger than me and try to be the most positive person around at school and at swimming as my squad and friend group are very dear to my heart and play a big role in my life.”

INTERVIEW:

Q: You are passionate and doing so well in your Swimming tell me a little bit about how you started in Swimming and your journey in the Swimming arena up to now?

It all started with water safety when I was really young, and then from there my brother was really the big swimmer, only once he stopped at the age of 11 did I really start focusing on my swimming. I broke my first SA record at the age of 12 and went on my first Senior National Team at the age of 13 after winning a bronze medal at Senior Nationals in 2012.

Q: What is the highest accolade that you have achieved in Swimming and what is your greatest personal accomplishment?

I can’t think of a single accomplishment that has been my biggest, as I have been extremely blessed throughout my career. But my greatest memories are being part of the Youth Olympic Team, placing in medal contention at Youth Commonwealth Games and being Senior National Open Champion for two years in a row.

natz03

Q: You swam wonderfully at Olympic trials – It was still one of the toughest, and most important sporting events for a swimmer to attend. Would you like to share what is on your heart and mind and how you experienced it?

Olympic trials was definitely the toughest competition I have ever attended. My training partner at the time Michael Meyer qualified on the Sunday evening and my main event was only the following Saturday so keeping your emotions on a low and staying calm after seeing your partner qualify was one of the toughest things to do. Coming to the race I had an extremely good semi-final being just under a second off of the qualifying time in the 200m backstroke so I was extremely confident and comfortable going into the final, but the pressure was really on because no other girl had qualified and I was the country’s last hope. To this day I will still say that it was the perfect race, there is not one thing I could have done differently, but at the time, I just wasn’t strong enough, but through it all I learnt a very valuable lesson and that is that everything happens for a reason.

Q: In your opinion, what is the value of Education in a young person’s life?

I think education is the most important thing a young person has to do/go through. Especially after not qualifying for Olympics this year I realized that swimming is not going to be around forever and I need to make sure that I have a life to go back to and a plan B in a sense for the day I retire.

Q: Would you like to share a little bit more about your faith journey and how it has affected your life / sports?

This year has been the toughest year of my life as I had constant battles with my faith. I remember how angry and lost I was after trials because I didn’t make it, and I remember the nights where I would lie in my mother’s arms crying because I couldn’t understand why my biggest dream/wish wasn’t granted. I felt completely lost after trials because my whole life was planned around that moment for the past 4 years. Only once I moved to Tuks and got settled into the Hostel and started training with my new squad did I realize what a big blessing I have been given to carry on swimming and to be in this environment. I then realized that God works in strange ways and you don’t always understand why things are happening but I now know that He has the perfect plan for me and I can put my trust in Him fully.

natz04

Q: What do you do to relax?

I mostly enjoy spending time with my family and friends over weekends and just relaxing at home or going out for dinner.

Q: One thing about you that the world does not know J

I am a complete fanatic about cars, I know everything there is to know about a V8 and a Turbo.

Q: What is your personal favourite motivational quote?

“Sometimes when you’re in a dark place you think you’ve been buried, but actually you’ve been planted.” – Christine Caine

Q: What is your favourite Bible / Scripture quote?

“I will walk by faith even when I cannot see.” 2 Corinthians 5:7

natz05

Q: In your opinion, how do you define success in life / how do you define a successful person?

I think success is relative to the life you want to live and what you find important. But personally a successful life for me is living a happy, healthy, faith based life and being able to give back to the country’s youth and swimming community.

Q: What’s your WHY ?

I want to be able to set an example for young female swimmers in the country and be able to give back to them and help them through the difficult things that female swimmers go through and give them advice on how I dealt with these things, so that we can build a better base of support  for the female swimmers in this country.

Up Close with Olympian Dieter Rosslee

Today I would like to honour one SA’s brilliant young rowing stars –  Dieter Rosslee. He was proudly part of Team SA at this year’s Rio Paralympics as part of the LTA Mixed Cox 4 Rowing Team. They have done brilliantly leading up to Rio.Even in Rio their fight and resilience was amazing, he explains it below.

Of course this type of excellence does not happen in isolation and without brilliant coaching. The other members are Lucy Perold, Sandra Khumalo, Shannon Murray  Dylan Trollope, Dieter Rosslee, Willie Morgan (Coxwain). They train under the watchful, loving  eye of Coach Marco Galeone.

About himself he says “Passionate, Adventurous, Caring. I keep to myself when it comes to everyday life. I hate making things inconvenient for others . I would rather struggle on my own and get frustrated than ask for help“.

INTERVIEW:

Before Olympics:

Q: Firstly congrats on qualifying for Rio Olympics ! What is on your heart and mind right now concerning this qualification?

Thank you, first our main goal was to qualify the boat for the Rio games. After this the focus was to stay in the boat that would go on to compete at The Games. Now I am aiming for a medal position at the Paralympics.

After Olympics:

Once we got there the vibe was amazing. We didn’t really explore the village that much before competition, we just knew of the places we had to be most.

The dining hall was massive , I’ve never seen so much food, cold drinks and people in one place.
Our venue was exceptional as well to be rowing on the water and seeing Christ the Redeemer… Wow. Not everyone can say they saw him everyday for 2 weeks.

Things were going pretty well for us with last minute preparations. The night before racing the nerves started to kick in , I could handle it quite well as we have done a lot of international races over the years…. Although it was a greater deal …this was it … What we have been working for .

We were mentally prepared for the racing and knew what we had to do in the heat in Friday. Although it didn’t work out as we wanted to , we were still satisfied with our performance.

On the Saturday we had to race the Repechage … It was one of the toughest races I’ve done other than the final… Because that race was the decider for the A-final. My nerves were crazy. We had the tougher Repechage … We had to come at least 2nd , the fight for second place was between us and Australia right til the end. They were ahead of us for the first 750m and then we just passed them the last bit… The leg burn was real .
But the reward was great… The first African team to have made a Paralympic Rowing A-final…

The Sunday was the big race … We were up against all the Giants… Conditions weren’t great at all… But this is what we trained for in SA… We were familiar with the conditions. Unfortunately the other crews were just faster … And we came 5th… We are still happy with our performance.

The country itself was amazing after racing was done we had a lot of time to do some sight seeing.

I would definitely want to do another Paralympics!

Q: You are one of SA’s top athletes, passionate and doing so well in your Rowing tell me a little bit about how you started in rowing and your journey in the rowing arena up to now?

Well, I have also been encouraged by my parents to be active, since I had the accident at the age of 5. So I tried athletics and I played field hockey for a while in Primary school and High school. Then I think in 2010 someone told me to go for Para Rowing Classifications, and my parents told me I should at least just see what it is. The classifiers then told me that I am eligible to row in the LTA category, and that I had a lot of potential in the sport because of my body structure. During my learning period of rowing , I only rowed in a single for about two years . I then started training with the SA Para Rowing squad of that time. In 2013 Coach Marco Galeone approached me and said that I will have to train in the boat combination that will go on to compete at the 2013 World Rowing Championships. As a young boy I was quite scared and nervous , but with the support from my team, coach and of course my family I was able to get to the standard the expected from me in a short period of time and here we went on to obtain the Bronze. Since then I have competed internationally every year – 2014 Gavirate International Para Rowing Regatta , 2014 Word Rowing Champs, Amsterdam , 2015 Gavirate International Para Rowing Regatta, 2015 World Rowing Championships, France.

dieter03

Q: Why do you have such deep seated respect for your coach?

My coach Marco Galeone has so much knowledge with rowing, as he has been around rowing for a very long time. He like my second father, he cares for us in more ways than one can think a coach does. He invests so much of his time for us, to make us succeed in rowing, and life.

Q: What do you do to relax?

I listen to music, watch series or movies and spend time with my family

Q: What is your personal favourite motivational quote?

“Never be ashamed of a scar. It means you were stronger than whatever tried to hurt you”

dieter04

Q: What is your definition of greatness?

Living life to the fullest

Q: What’s your WHY ?

Basically to show that nothing is impossible. To encourage young even elderly people that no matter how many times life knocks you down, shake it off and keep on going.

Q: One thing about you that the world does not know J

I sometimes take off my prosthetic leg at parties dance with it in my hand (in the air). And I can be quite the charmer.

dieter05

Thank you so much for taking this interview. We would like to wish you all the best for your journey ahead. We look forward to following you as you go from strength to strength. Blessings!

My faith in Jesus. It has been the core of my success. I was fortunate to be born in a Christian family so I made a decision at the early stage of my life to follow Jesus. Success is not defined by one thing. In my opinion, I believe success is about everyone accomplishing their set goals. There are no set meassurements or scale for success. A successful person is someone who has achieved their short and long term goals.

Q: What’s your WHY ?

I do what I do because I want to be the blueprint and the proof to everyone that, it doesn’t matter who you are or where you come from, we all have equal chances to make it. Everyone has 24 hours in a day, the difference is how we use our time.

My family, relatives, friends, my school and my Town is counting on me. From a township, broken background, going against all odds to make my life a success.

I want to be a true reflection of success and an inspirational story to the generations that comes after me.

Q: What are your immediate / short term plans for rugby 2017?

My main objective for 2017 is to play in a varsity cup, Carrie cup and my prime focus is on the u/20 Junior World Cup.

Chad Burke, brilliant hockey player and academic really inspired me so deeply in this interview. A young man with profound integrity, solid core values and passionate about his sport, his community, his SA Nation, his family and his friends.  A deep thinker and thought leader, he is grateful and powerful in what he does on and off the field. Proudly one of SA’s sons with rooted purpose and intent make a things better for the future.

He says  “The person I am today was really shaped by my father, who enforced strict discipline onto me from a very young age. Any top sportsman needs discipline and a clear set of values which distinguishes what is right and wrong”.  Furthermore ” I would like to be characterized in the future as someone who is passionate about what I do, someone who is hard-working, someone who is a role-model, and someone who leaves a positive impact in whatever I do’.

INTERVIEW:

Q: You are passionate and doing so well in your Hockey, tell me a little bit about how you started in Hockey, and your journey up to now?

I’ve always been passionate about sport, and this started from a very young age. I was already playing competitive club cricket at the age of 7 against 9 year olds, where there is quite a vast developmental difference at those ages. I was also playing football during that period and those were my two favourite sports at that stage. I started playing hockey in grade 4 (age 10) after I saw one of the grade 7 boys (Brynn Cleak) playing it. At that stage, I had never heard of hockey before, and had no idea how it was even played. I watched a bit of Brynn playing at our school’s senior interhouse competition on that same day, and decided to give it a go the following day in the junior interhouse competition. Funny enough, Brynn and I eventually ended up playing together at UJ for the last three years. I originally played as a forward because I played in that position in football, and managed to score 5 goals in my first ever game playing hockey. I enjoyed the technical skill, pace, and similarities between football and hockey, and decided to pursue hockey as my third sport at that point. By the following year, I had made the district team. And the year after that, I made a provincial team. I was also ranked 3rd in the school for tennis and was the 2nd quickest in athletics, and I think the fact that sport came so naturally to me made the progression into hockey a seamless process.

Q: What is the highest accolade that you have achieved in Hockey, and what is your greatest personal accomplishment?

The highest accolade I’ve achieved in hockey is being a part of the UJ side that won the first installment of Men’s Varsity Cup Hockey Competition in 2014. Although I had played in the Southern Gauteng U21A side for three years, my highest/greatest accomplishment was playing in my first Senior Men’s provincial tournament in 2015, while still carrying the hip injury which eventually had to be operated on.

Q: Who are you? Describe yourself as a person.

I would describe myself as a passive person who mostly expresses myself on the sports field, in an environment where I am able to be more assertive. I am someone who values friendship, which is why I think I have always enjoyed team sports, where everyone is driven towards a common goal. I am someone who enjoys being around people, but also enjoys being on my own. And in most facets of my life, I try and look for a balance. I am someone who is driven and motivated to be at the top, and would more than anything – love to give back to my parents one day. Although I know I could never repay them for all that they have done for me, my aim is to try and give back as much as I possibly can.

Q: You have just hit a difficult patch in their sports career, would you like to share a bit? What advice can you give other young athletes in this regard?

The last 12 months in my sporting career has certainly been the toughest up to date. It has been a period riddled by frustration, confusion, physical pain, as well as exercising a lot of patience. The fact that I visited various medical institutions without getting a very transparent answer about what was wrong, and instead – speculating on my injury, was very frustrating for me. The moment I discovered what my injury was, was bittersweet, as I finally had a definitive answer, but I was also worried because of the complexity of the operation, the cost of the operation, as well as the amount of time spent away from the astro turf. A bilateral FAI hip operation is a very complex operation in which I spent 4 and a half hours in theatre. It has been a very steep uphill journey, but one month into my recovery – I could finally see light at the end of the tunnel. The advice that I would give young sportsmen is to look after themselves in the best way possible, and to not take their time on the sports field for granted. Although some injuries aren’t avoidable (like mine) due to body composition, bone structure etc, there are potential injuries that can be avoided by proper stretching, managing your weight, correct exercising and breathing techniques, and understanding your limits. One never knows when it will be one’s last game, so my advice would be to not take one’s time on the sports field for granted, and realise how lucky one is to be doing the thing that one loves.

Q: In your opinion, how do you define success / greatness in life?

The topic of how success is defined is broad and can be interpreted in various ways by different people. Of course – to be the best in the world at something, or to break world records and win Olympic medals, or to own a business can be defined as success, but my definition of success/greatness is how someone is remembered and the long lasting impact that someone can have on people once he/she is no longer here. If people use/refer to your methods, characteristics, style, innovations etc in any facet of life, then you have left a lasting impact in the lives of others, and that is my definition of success.

USSA 2015, representing the University of Johannesburg

USSA 2015, representing the University of Johannesburg

Q: What do you do to relax?

Because of my club hockey, fitness sessions and compulsory gym sessions, provincial hockey, the various tournaments, coaching, as well as my studies, I often tend to experience burnout throughout the year. To relax, I mostly spend time with family and friends – those who I value the most, and can sit and talk to. My relaxation can be as simple as laying on the coach watching series, or downloading music, and can be best described as downtime. However, during the season there isn’t a lot of time available for relaxation or downtime, so I try and take advantage of it whenever I can.

Q: Tell me one thing about yourself that the world does not know 🙂?

Besides sports and studies, my goal is to travel and see as much of the world/ earth as I possibly can.

Q: What was the best advice you were ever given?

The best advice I’ve been given was on the topic of self-discipline. Self-discipline is about putting in the extra hours by yourself and going that extra mile in order to perfect your skills and be better than your peers. It is about looking after yourself and your body, and putting in as much interest, research, additional skills and training, and effort into your field of work. The thing about self-discipline is that only you can control it and are responsible for it. Therefore, where you want to end up what you want to achieve is all in your own hands. Along with all the personal characteristics that can make someone successful, I think that self-discipline is by far the most important.

Q: What is your personal favourite motivational quote?

“A key to success is playing the hand you were dealt like it was the hand you wanted.”

 Q: What’s your WHY ?

The reason I play hockey is because I love the sport, and sports in general. The thing that sets hockey apart from most sports is the speed at which it is played, and the speed at which the ball moves along with the intensity of the players – especially at the highest levels. My motivating factors are to play for my country one day, as well as play overseas professionally. I would like to see more focus and interest in hockey from those in power in South African sport. I would like South Africa to be a place where hockey can be pursued as a career, where players don’t have to pay for camps and travelling costs, and where a professional league is developed in order for SA players to thrive. My impact on the SA youth through my coaching and passion for the sport, is to encourage and ensure that as many of these youngsters pursue hockey after their completion of high school, and to not just quit or pursue other sports like most of these players do. I would also like to contribute to the development of hockey one day, whether it be a monetary contribution, my personal expertise, or in underprivileged communities where young kids aren’t exposed to hockey. There is a lot of undiscovered talent in South Africa, and not just in the suburbs or areas where astro turfs are available. I hope to discover these talents one day once I am done playing hockey, and hope to push these players to the highest possible level.

INTERVIEW:

Q: Congratulations! – You did brilliantly at the Aerobic Gymnastics World Championships in Korea. Do you want to share a little on your achievements here (individually / team), how did you experience it? Lesson learned?

Thank you so much 🙂 I compete in a team event. There are three of us in the team, Wilson Mafona, Happy Ledebwa and myself , we take part in the Trio Section. This is a very popular section in Aerobic Gymnastics. We went to Korea with a goal, it was to try place 1st out of all the African countries. This was a very important goal, because if reached, it would advance us onto other major and important competitions for 2017, some of which we are unable to mention at present. The task was big, because there are a lot of very strong African countries, but we managed to pull off a very clean routine and reach our goal. We are currently ranked 1st in Africa. We are over the moon and couldn’t have done it without our coach Alta Lategan!

Q: Why do you have so much love and respect for your coach/es?

People often forget that coaches have to give up as much time and put in as much commitment as the athletes do, to help an athlete realise their goal.  More often than not, the coaches are forgotten in the excitement.  It is a 50/50 partnership.  I have great respect for my coaches for this reason.

Q: How do you balance your sport with the rest of your life / career / studies?

It is difficult to balance other areas of my life with sport, but every athlete who is hungry for victory will always find a way around it. It’s all about priority at the end of the day.

Q: Would you like to share a little bit more about your faith journey and how it has affected your life / sports?

I know God is with me every step of the way. I was raised with Christian values, and will always be grateful and faithful.

Q: What do you do to relax?

The very little time I have off from my sport. I enjoy spending time with my family and boyfriend. I love having fun outings with my friends and really enjoy a good movie.

Q: One thing about you that the world does not know 🙂

I am a lefty, and I have a secret stash of chocolate 🙂

2015-09-05 16.38.05

Q: What is your personal favourite motivational quote?

Hard work beats talent, when talent doesn’t work hard!!!!

Q: What is your favourite Bible / Scripture quote?

“A foolish person refuses to listen to his father’s advice. But a wise person listens closely when people try to teach him.” Proverbs 15:5

Q: In your opinion, how do you define greatness / success in life?

The ultimate secret to success, is the ability to endure criticism without resentment.

Q: What’s your WHY ?  Why do you do what you do?

I do what I do because I am passionate about sport and competing, and the wonderful feeling of stepping into a competition arena in the Green and Gold.  I hope that our youth see in me, someone that leads by example when it comes to commitment, sportsmanship and humility.

INTERVIEW:

Before Rio:

Q: Firstly – congrats on all your recent brilliant rugby performances. And that you are part of the squad preparing for the Rio Olympics. What is on your heart and mind right now concerning this upcoming big event in Rio?

First of all, it is a massive honour and privilege to be part of the final squad traveling to Rio.

Our focus at this point in time is to be better every time we leave the training pitch and to “fine tune” all aspects of our game.

After Rio:

Your feedback of Rio Olympics?

The road to Rio we knew was going to be tough. We came through the season quite nicely ending second after Fiji, then it was time for Rio. The final squad was 19 guys competing for the 12 spots. I was very fortunate to be named as one of the 12. We then arrived in Rio, the village and facilities was fantastic, and amazing and the opening ceremony was was what every sports guy can dream of. The preps was good, being part of Team SA was very special. What made it truly amazing was sitting at a table in the dining hall and then Usain Bolt walks in with such a presence and then you realise what the hype around the Olympics really is all about.

At the tournament we all went hard and ended up at podium position with a Bronze. This was a massive honour and a privilege – something that I will cherish for a lifetime and the pinnacle of my career!

You know that the ball can bounce in any guy’s favour – that is part of the game.

Q: You became the ninth South African to reach the special milestone of 35 World Rugby Sevens Series tournaments at the Hong Kong Sevens. Your thoughts on this?

It was a wonderful achievement to join the 35 “club”, but what makes it even more special is to share it with all my teammates and family who are always there for me.

Q: How did you get started in Rugby?

Some of my earliest memories are with a rugby ball in hand!

philip03

Q: Who are you? Describe yourself as a person?

I am a husband, family man and team player who hates to disappoint people. I just want the best for the people close to me.

I think I am also quite laid back.

Q: What is the highest accolade that you have achieved in Rugby and what is your greatest personal accomplishment?

Being part of the Blitzboks, growing as a team and reaching our goals.

Personal- winning the World Sevens Series in 2008/2009.

Q:  Why do you have so much respect for your coach?

Neil is honest, hard working, leads by example and he is a role model for the whole team.

philip04

Q: What do you do to relax?

Spend some time with friends and family- braai, go for a coffee etc.

Q: I believe you are a great coffee advocate and snob :-)? Do you want to share on this a little?

I’m not sure about that, but I enjoy a good cup of coffee and have a couple of manual brewing gadgets at home. I think I am a coffee enthusiast…okay, maybe a fanatic!

Q: What is your personal favourite motivational quote?

Always put an extra plate at the dinner table, so when destiny knocks on the door you can invite it in.

Q: Do you want to share a little on your faith journey for far in sport and life?

I believe one can achieve anything if you put your trust in the Lord, believe in yourself and work really hard.

philip05

Q: What is your leadership style, having had this leadership position in the team recently.

I am a firm believer of leading by example.

Q: What’s your WHY?

I want to live my life to the fullest of my potential, let God’s light shine through me and leave this world a better place than I found it.

Q: Anything else you would like to share?

A big thanks to the whole of South Africa who supports us through thick and thin – we wish to make you proud in the upcoming Olympic Games in Rio.
